Charitable Remainder Trust

Solutions for Large Donations

If you have built a sizable estate and also are looking for ways to receive reliable payments, consider a charitable remainder trust. This type of trust provides you or other named individuals income each year for life or a period not exceeding 20 years from assets you give to the trust you create. At the end of the trust term, the balance in the trust goes to MD Anderson.

These types of gifts may offer you tax benefits and the option for income. There are two ways to receive payments, and each has its own benefits:

The annuity trust pays you, each year, the same dollar amount you choose at the start. Your payments stay the same, regardless of fluctuations in trust investments.

The unitrust pays you, each year, a variable amount based on a fixed percentage of the fair market value of the trust assets. The amount of your payments is redetermined annually. If the value of the trust increases, so do your payments. If the value decreases, however, so will your payments.

Angela and Bob Knauss

Angela and Bob Knauss, Cancer survivors

When Angela Knauss moved from New Hampshire to Houston with her husband, Bob, she did not like driving past anything that read “MD Anderson.”

“I thought, ‘I hope I never end up there,’” Angela said. “Considering both sides of my family have histories of several cancers, it was not a realistic expectation — just a hope. And then it happened.”

Angela was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992. She weighed her options and decided to visit the one place she hoped she never would. Her feelings about the institution changed instantly, from unsettled to optimistic, thanks to her physicians and care team. When her cancer returned in 2001, she did not hesitate to seek additional care at MD Anderson.

“The doctors and staff are top notch,” Angela said. “Not only did they save my life, they kept me sane. They made cancer a positive experience.”

After Bob received both a cancer diagnosis and exceptional care from MD Anderson, they decided to support the institution through a charitable remainder trust.

“Bob and I chose this hospital because we wanted to receive care from the best in the world,” Angela said. “But we give to MD Anderson because we feel so fortunate to have had such caring people look after us.”
